Ask about a matter
Ask the assistant what is outstanding on a matter, what a document says, or which of your matters need attention, with a source for every answer.
Before you start
Ask about a matter must be on for your firm. If you don't see the Ask button, an admin may have turned it off, blocked your role, or left the matter out. See what the assistant can do.
Ask on a matter
- Open the matter and click Ask at the top.
- Type your question in the box, or click one of the suggested questions above it.
- Press Enter, or click the arrow, to send.
The assistant reads this matter's details, hearings, tasks, notes and documents, but only what you can open. While it works you see what it is doing, such as Reading the matter.
On a wide screen the panel opens beside the matter, so you can keep working. On a phone or narrow window it opens as a sheet.
Check the sources
Each claim in an answer carries a small number. The Sources list under the answer says what each number is: a document, a hearing, a task or a note. Click a number or a source to open it. A document opens on its Summary.
Answers can be wrong. Check the sources before relying on them.
Act on an answer
Under each answer you can:
- Copy the answer.
- Save to notes: adds the answer and its sources to the matter's notes, titled "Assistant:" followed by your question. See keep matter notes.
- Mark it Helpful or Not helpful.
If the assistant suggests a task, it appears as a Suggested task card:
- Add task adds it to the matter's tasks straight away when the assistant named a person and a due date. Otherwise the Add task form opens with the details filled in.
- Edit first opens the Add task form so you can change it before saving.
Nothing is added until you click.
If you ask for a draft (start your question with "Draft"), the answer is marked Draft · review before sending. Clients only see it after you send or share it.
Start again
The panel keeps your latest conversation on the matter. Click New chat to start a fresh one. Click the cross to close the panel.
Ask across all your matters
To ask about more than one matter, use search:
- Press ⌘K (Ctrl K on Windows), or click the search box at the top.
- Switch from Search to Ask.
- Type a question such as which hearings are coming up, what's overdue or which matters have gone quiet, and press Enter.
The assistant looks only at the matters you can open. The answer lists the matters it found; click one to open it. You can then:
- Copy as list to copy the matters as a bulleted list.
- Create a task on each when it suggests a task on several matters.
- Ask a follow-up to carry on the conversation.
The matter brief
The matter's overview shows a Matter brief: a short summary of where the matter stands, written by the assistant, with anything that needs attention. Click Refresh to have it written again.
Questions
Why does it say a document is still being read?
New uploads are read in the background. Until a document has been read, the assistant can't search it.
Can it see matters I can't open?
No. It follows your matter permissions on every question.
