Draft and summarise documents
Read the assistant's summary of a document, then have it fill a firm template from the matter, answering the points you choose.
Document summaries
When you upload a PDF or Word file, the assistant reads it and writes a summary. Scanned files are read with OCR first. This needs Document summaries and key facts turned on in the assistant's settings.
- Open the document.
- Click the Summary tab.
The summary has up to three parts:
- In short: what the document is about.
- Key facts: such as the parties, sums of money, dates and deadlines, each with the paragraph it came from. On a PDF, click the paragraph to go to its page. Next to a date, click Add to key dates to put it on the matter's key dates.
- Points to answer: when the document comes from another party, the claims your client may need to answer.
If the summary looks wrong, click Redo. If the document is long, the summary covers its first part and says so.
While the document is still being read, the tab shows Reading the document. If the assistant couldn't read it, you see No summary for this document with the reason. Upload a clearer copy to try again.
Draft from a template
The assistant can fill one of your firm's templates from the matter. It writes only the template's assistant parts, and asks you for any fact it couldn't find. This needs Drafting from templates turned on.
- Open the matter's Documents tab and click Draft with the assistant. From a document whose summary has points to answer, you can click Draft our reply instead; its points are filled in for you.
- Under Template, choose the template.
- Under Answer these points, untick any point you don't want, or click + Add a point.
- Under Use facts from, tick the documents the assistant should read. Tick Matter notes to include the notes too.
- Add any instructions under Anything else.
- Click Write the draft.
Review and save the draft
In the draft:
- Blue text was written by the assistant.
- Yellow boxes are facts it couldn't find.
- Plain text came from the template unchanged.
- Click a yellow box, or Go to the first one, and type what the document should say.
- Click Save and go to the next until every box is filled.
- Click Save and open in editor.
Chronica saves the document to the matter, marked Needs review, and opens it in the editor. You can't save while any yellow box is empty.
To change the points or documents, edit them and click Write the draft again. Click Discard to throw the draft away.
If the draft has no assistant parts, the template has no place for the assistant to write. Add the Assistant writes here field to the template where it should write. See create documents from templates.
Updates for the client
On a matter's Client portal tab, in the Updates for card, click Draft an update. The assistant writes a plain-English update and leaves out your internal notes, fees and anything not already shared with the client. Edit it, then click Share with the client. Nothing is sent until you do. See what clients see.
Questions
Does it make up case law?
It never cites a case it hasn't been given. Check every draft before it leaves the firm.
Why are some documents missing from Use facts from?
Only documents the assistant has read are listed. If none have been read, the draft uses the matter's details only.
