What clients see in the portal

Choose what each client can see on their matters, preview it as they will, and learn what the portal shows them once they sign in.

What is never shown

Tasks, notes and time entries are never shown in the client portal. Everything else is shown only when it is switched on for the matter, and documents only when you share them.

Set your firm's defaults

An admin sets what new matters show by default.

  1. Open Settings, then Client portal.
  2. Under What clients see by default, switch on or off Matter progress, Court dates and outcomes, Documents · shared only and Invoices and payments.
  3. Click Save changes.

Only firm admins can change these settings. The defaults apply to each matter until someone changes them on that matter. The invitation email also lists what the client can do, based on these defaults.

Change what one client sees on a matter

  1. Open the matter and click the Client portal tab.
  2. Under What … can see, switch each item on or off:
SwitchWhat the client sees
Matter progressThe stage and a short summary
Court dates and outcomesHearings and outcomes in plain words
Updates from the legal teamOnly updates a lawyer shares
DocumentsOnly documents marked visible
Invoices and paymentsInvoices, receipts and paying online
MessagesSecure messages with the legal team

Each change saves straight away and is recorded in the audit log.

To share a document, switch on Visible to client on it. A document stays private until you do.

Check before you share

Click Preview as client on the matter's Client portal tab to see what the client sees for that matter. Nothing in the preview can be changed.

What the client sees when they sign in

The portal carries your firm's name, logo and colour. It has these sections:

  • Home: a welcome, Things to do (documents to sign, invoices to pay, documents to send and forms to fill in), their next court date and their matters.
  • My matters: each matter with Where things are, how the case is progressing, the next court date, past court dates with a short note on what happened, Updates from your legal team, the documents and invoices for that matter, and Your legal team.
  • Documents: everything shared with them, grouped by matter, plus documents to sign and forms to fill in.
  • Invoices: what they owe, what they have paid, every invoice and their receipts. They can pay online from an invoice.
  • Messages: their conversations with the legal team. See messages with clients.
  • My companies: only shown when the firm shows one of their companies in the portal.

On an open matter, the client can also book a meeting with their lawyer from Your legal team.

Questions

Can I take back an update I shared?

Yes. On the matter's Client portal tab, find the update under Updates for … and click Withdraw. It is removed from the client's portal.

What happens if I switch something off?

The client stops seeing it on that matter straight away. Nothing is deleted, and you can switch it back on.
