Invite a client to the portal
Send a client, or one of their contacts, an email invitation to the client portal so they can follow their matters online.
Before you start
- The client portal must be on for your firm. An admin turns it on in Settings, then Client portal. Until then, the invite window says "The client portal is off for your firm".
- The person you invite needs an email address. It can't be an email that already signs in to Chronica, such as a staff member's.
- You can invite if you are a firm admin or a responsible lawyer on one of the client's matters.
Send the invitation
- Open the client's page and click the Related people tab. Or open a matter and click its Client portal tab.
- Under Portal access (or Who has access on a matter), click Invite to client portal. If someone already has access, the button says Invite another contact.
- Under Who to invite, choose the client or one of their contacts. People who already have access or an invitation are greyed out. To invite someone not listed, choose Someone else and fill in Name on the invitation and Email.
- Under Matters to include, tick the matters the email should name.
- Add a Personal note if you like.
- Check the Email preview, then click Send invitation.
The matters you tick are only named in the email. What the client sees on each matter is set on that matter's Client portal tab. See what clients see.
What the client receives
The client gets an email from your firm with the subject "… invited you to your client portal". It lists what they can do in the portal, includes your note, and has a Set up my account button.
- The client clicks Set up my account.
- They see their email address, set by your firm, and choose a password.
- They click Create my account, then sign in with that email and password.
The link works once and expires after 7 days.
If the client didn't set up their account in time, the person's status shows Invitation expired. Open the options menu (⋯) next to their name and click Resend invitation. Ask them to use the newest email.
Check who has access
The list under Portal access shows each person and their status:
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Invited | The email has gone, and they haven't set up their account yet. |
| Active | They have set up their account. The list shows when they were last seen. |
| Invitation expired | The link ran out before they used it. |
| Revoked | Their access has been taken away. |
Remove access
- Open the options menu (⋯) next to the person and click Revoke access.
- Click Revoke access again to confirm.
They are signed out of the portal and can't sign in again. Any unused invitation link stops working. To undo this, open the menu and click Restore access.

Can I invite a client while converting a lead?
Yes. On the last step of converting a lead, tick the option to invite them to the client portal.
What if the portal is turned off later?
Turning the portal off in settings stops every client signing in. Nothing is deleted.
