Open a matter

Go to Matters and click a matter's title. The list has views across the top: My matters, All active, In court this week, On hold and Closed. You can filter by Practice area, Responsible, Court and Stage, or search by title, client or suit number. Switch between List and By stage to see matters as a board, one column per stage.

To keep a filter you use often, click + Save view and give it a name. It appears next to the other views.

The header

The top of every matter shows:

  • the title and its status
  • the reference, the client (click the name to open their profile), the practice area, the responsible lawyer and the date it opened
  • the buttons for the tab you are on. On Overview these are Log time, Create document and Log hearing outcome. On Court it's Add hearing, on Tasks it's Add task, and on Parties it's Add party.

If the matter has stages, a stage bar sits under the title. Click a stage to move the matter there. See Stages and matter templates.

The Overview cards

On the left:

  • Key dates: the dates the matter turns on, such as "Writ filed" or "Reply due". Click Add or Edit to change them. Tick It's a deadline for a date that must be met. A deadline that passes without being ticked Done shows as overdue.
  • Open tasks: the next five open tasks. Tick one to mark it done, or click Add task.
  • Recent documents and Billing (unbilled, billed, paid and outstanding, with Create invoice).
  • Stage history, when the matter has stages.

On the right:

  • Next hearing: the date, court and purpose, whether the client will be reminded, and whose calendars it's on. Log outcome appears on the day of the hearing.
  • People: the lawyers on the matter, and whether everyone at the firm can see it. Click Manage to change them in the matter's settings.
  • Parties: the client, adverse parties and opposing counsel. Click Add to add one.

Questions

Where do I change the title, court or suit number?

Open the Settings tab. The Details section holds the matter's details.

Why can't I see a matter a colleague mentioned?

It may be set so only certain people can see it. Ask someone who can open it to add you under Who can see it in the matter's settings.
